A Sydney mayor wants to sink a navy ship off Coogee Beach to create an artificial reef for scuba divers, but is facing a revolt by councillors concerned about the cost and impact on marine life.
A narrow majority of councillors for Randwick City Council late last month backed the $10 million proposal from the Gordons Bay Scuba Diving Club.
However, Randwick City’s support for the proposal was overturned the next day, when three councillors lodged a rescission motion forcing the council to suspend the decision until its next meeting later this month.
