THE Southern Ocean floor has been mapped in its greatest ever detail, with scientists precisely charting its mountains, canyons and plains.
Covering 48km2 million, the map also details a new deepest point – a depression extending 7.4km down called the Factorian Deep.
The International Bathymetric Chart of the Southern Ocean has taken five years to compile and update the first attempt at a comprehensive map, which was published in 2013.
