THE archipelagic country of Maldives is planning to reclaim land from the ocean in a bid to reverse its sinking effects.

However, the plan to dredge millions of tonnes of sand to create more land is controversial, with fears it could “choke” the local ecosystem.

The plan would also have the effect of creating land for the tourism industry, with the Maldives able to sell the newfound terra firma to the resorts sector.

The low-lying nation is one of the world’s most vulnerable to climate change.
